I have a couple of cool stories in the works, but I need a little more time. So this week, I’m turning it over to you. I want to hear your thoughts!
I’m inspired by a friend from high school who emailed me this week. We haven’t spoken in 20 years, but she reads Bar\Heart and wanted to tell me how she's feeling about belonging. Here’s what she wrote:
Her note reminded me that the idea of belonging is rich and expansive territory for us to consider. It’s not just about a place. We can belong to people, an age, even a place in time. Or we can feel completely outside ourselves, our bodies, our communities, even our era.
I want to hear what belonging means to you. Tell me your stories and thoughts.
You can also send me a voice memo, which I'd love. Record yourself using the voice memo app on your phone and then email the clip to me. There’s something so intimate and lovely in hearing the human voice tell a story, don't you think?
Here are a few prompts to get you thinking:
What does it mean to you to belong – or not – in America?
Have you ever felt like you belonged – where and why?
Tell me about your community – what makes you feel connected or disconnected to it.
Is there a place that you feel defines you or feels like home? Can you describe why?
How has age changed your sense of identity and belonging?
I look forward to receiving your stories, your gifts to me, and sharing them. I promise that anything you send will be kept anonymous so that you can be open and vulnerable rather than feel you need to perform for social media.
P.S. On Friday, I'm making a sober paloma from Julie Bainbridge's book, Good Drinks. You'll need grapefruit juice, lime juice, soda water, sugar, salt and rosemary, if you want to make it on with me on Friday. During the LIVE on Instagram at 4:30 p.m. EST, I'll be interviewing Kelsey Ronan, author of the book Chevy in the Hole.
P.P.S.: Here’s the pheasant that visited our house yesterday, captured by our insanely talented neighbor. If you like bird photos, you should follow her.
